UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN River Falls

Regional Placement Tests

We are pleased that you have chosen the University of Wisconsin-River Falls for your college education.  The following information explains the Regional Placement Testing Program.  These tests are your next step in the enrollment process.

What are they?  Placement tests are used to place you into appropriate English composition and math classes.  Foreign language tests (French, German and Spanish) are also available for those who have taken a language in high school and wish to continue.  It is important to do your best on these tests.  You may be required to take remedial courses if your scores are low.

Do I have to take them?  All UW-River Falls students are required to complete these tests, unless you have taken a college course in math and/or English composition.  If you've taken French, German, or Spanish in high school and are considering continuing in that language, it is recommended that you take the foreign language test.

What if I've taken AP Courses?  If you are taking an AP math course or AP English Language and Composition this spring, you should plan on taking the placement tests (because the AP scores will not be available until July and registration is in June - if necessary, you can adjust your schedule in July).

Where do I take them?  You can take the tests at any of the test centers listed online.  You do not need to take them at the UW-school you are planning to attend.

When do I take them?  There are several weekend dates listed online, most of which are in March, April, and May.  Space is limited, so it is important that you sign up for a testing date soon.  Please note: UWRF students who are unable to test during the spring may take the placement tests the day before their New Student Registration Program date.

If you are taking the placement tests at a location other than River Falls: you need to allow 10 business days prior to your registration date in order for scores to be available.

Students taking tests at River Falls the day before their registration date will have scores available the following day.

How do I sign up?  Register onlinelink (http://www.testing.wisc.edu/centerpages/regionaltesting.htmllink beginning February 1st (or by mail if you are requesting special accommodations).  Be sure to print off the confirmation information when you register.

Can I use a calculator?  You may use a non-graphing calculator.  Graphing calculators, or calculators that are part of a phone or other electronic device are not allowed.  Calculators cannot be shared and will not be provided.

Two Options

  1. Paper/Pencil testing method:  No additional cost
  2. Computer-Based Testing (CBT) method:  Non-refundable cost of $40-$125

UWRF is not offering any CBT dates, but students may choose the CBT option at another test site.  If you choose the CBT option, please read all of the instructions carefully.
