Qurina Slayhi (2012)

TESOL Major --> Tutor and Assistant Educator

Hometown: Stillwater, MN
Current City: Minneapolis, MN
Employer: Minneapolis Public Schools - Minneapolis, MN

It was the individual attention and affordability that brought Qurina to UW-River Falls, and it wasn’t long before the campus began to feel like her second home. “It was a place where I was able to make lasting relationships,” said Qurina. “UWRF provided me with many life changing experiences that helped shape me into the individual I am today.”

In Qurina’s freshmen year at UW-River Falls, it was university staff that encouraged her to pursue a leadership role on campus. “UWRF staff connected me with student groups, such as Asian American Student Association (AASA) and Community Action Theater Troops (CATTs) to help support my transition to college life,” she recalls. Qurina later became a student leader for Journey House Campus Ministries and started the student organization, Sisters and Brothers of Islam.

Now Qurina serves as the AVID tutor and site lead for a high school in Minneapolis. “I get to work with grades 9-12 where I assist the coordinator in implementing Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) into all facets of education, such as planning field trips and guest speakers and coordinating community building activities,” said Qurina. “I also serve as the advisor for the school’s Muslim Student Alliance (MSA). Both of these positions allow me the opportunity to help shape students into leaders and achievers.”

Qurina enjoys connecting with students and helping them succeed. “I get to build a unique relationship with each student and see them grow over the four years they are in the AVID program. It’s amazing to see the growth and maturity they attain over that period of time,” said Qurina.
