Program Overview

Communication is vital to all aspects of our personal and professional lives. Whether you're interested in the business, government or nonprofit sector, the Communication Studies major at UW-River Falls is an excellent choice to prepare you for a variety of professional careers. Our program focuses on the communication skills most needed by the student preparing for a career in law, education, business, health services, international relations and more.

Highlights of the Communication Studies Major

  • Flexible curriculum – there are four required core courses: interpersonal communication, nonverbal communication, persuasion and a senior-level research-oriented seminar. 

  • Students have hands-on learning opportunities that include a student operated radio station and student newspaper.

  • Internships are highly recommended and encouraged.

Skills and Learning Outcomes

As a student in this program, you will learn to:

  • Understand a variety of communication tools and media channels as well as the most effective ways to disseminate information.
  • Interpret and evaluate messages and their intended audiences.
  • Appreciate the interrelationship between theory, research and practice.
  • Understand and apply of ethical systems in communication.
  • Develop a sound foundation upon which you may build and adapt to future technological and social change.
