Professors must usually perform some kind of supporting task before the most common kinds of accommodation can be arranged in relation to their courses. To be ready for the task they should know that Ability Services believes it can be legitimate for a given student to have the accommodation. Thus, the office creates an individualized Accommodation Notification Memo. It lists the kinds of accommodation that can be appropriate for the student. The office then provides the student enough copies of the memo so the student can give one to all the professors of his or her courses. This method works well because:
Usually professors don't need to know the exact reason a student should be able to have accommodation. So the memo doesn't identify a specific type of medical, physical, sensory, or brain related issue.
If it seems important for professors to know the type of issue, the office still provides the student copies of that kind of memo. But the office also seeks the student's permission to let professors know the type of issue by some other method. However, the student is able to refuse permission. If permission is refused the office usually recommends the student should independently inform professors about the type of issue.
