UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN River Falls

Parent Information

The staff of Ability Services receive a lot of gratification from serving students and parents. We invite you to contact us with any questions, concerns, or feedback. However, please understand it's rare that we meet with students in person even when we're arranging their accommodations. It's because the office purposely functions in ways that can maximize their ability to be independent. So typically we don't know what's happening in their courses unless they voluntarily contact and tell us. The reasons are:

  • College students are considered legal adults with a strong right to privacy. So the staff of Ability Services avoid automatic efforts to closely monitor them closely.
  • Successful college students are usually very busy people. So the office must function in ways that doesn't require them to spend much time at the office. Also, some students worry classmates might notice they're involved with this office. So to get their accommodations we usually only expect them to fill out and submit certain forms that explain the details about what they want and when it's needed. They typically deliver the forms, then immediately leave.
  • Professors are usually very busy people. In some ways they're actually scientists, mathematicians, historians, artists, economists, business experts, etc.. Their first test or assignment may not occur until many weeks after a course starts. Thus, they can't always tell if specific students are struggling to learn something. And if students receive a low grade but don't seek support from professors, it can seem to professors the students are satisfied with the low grade.

Please appropriately monitor your student's involvement at UWRF and let us now if you're concerned about something. If your student is open to the idea of closer support from this office we can certainly schedule meetings for it. Yet even then we must rely on your student to supply the motivation for attending the meetings and working on important solutions. We can't force your student to do anything.
