Jeannine Spooner Kitzhaber teaches Painting, Drawing and Design and advises students in Art for UWRF.  A 2013 MN State Arts Board Initiative Grant winner, Kitzhaber's current work is about place, maps and travel. Feeling a disconnect in her surroundings due to her busy lifestyle and travel for work, Kitzhaber began using maps to address the physical and ethereal idea of place through a variety of vantage points. Kitzhaber constructs her maps through a visual layering process of painting, drawing, aerial photos, maps and fibrous paper. This layering process relates to the idea of time and is a tangible journal of travel and place. Kitzhaber earned a BFA and a MFA, both with an emphasis in Painting and Drawing from the University of MN-Twin Cities where she also studied Art History and English. A first generation college graduate, Kitzhaber considers herself a life-long learner. She has taken workshops in lithography, screen and monotype printmaking as well as digital drawing, Photoshop and Illustrator. In addition to her 15 years of experience teaching college-level art courses Kitzhaber managed a gallery, worked at a local art center and is a professional judge for local and national art competitions.  On campus, Kitzhaber is known for organizing numerous exhibitions for faculty and students and for being active in Learning Communities. In 2010, Kitzhaber was awarded a Compass Award for guiding students on their path to success at UWRF. An award winning artist, she has a studio in the historical Northrup King Building in NE Minneapolis. Kitzhaber is married and has three daughters; two of her daughters are graduates of UWRF in Art and Social Work.

Artist Statement

I have a deep connection with place, history and tradition. That sense and feeling of touching the land and understanding its significance in life, is something I will never forget. The daughter of a realtor and a homemaker, I grew up with a profound understanding of place, land and home. Memory, irony and a sense of bittersweet nostalgia are reoccurring themes in my Art. I find inspiration in old photographs, doilies, maps, patterns, aprons, and other seemingly ordinary objects. Some of these objects I can envision someone in another life touching and caring about, and I want to uncover their story. I want to take the ordinary, whether it is a common object or feeling, and make it extraordinary. My process involves both conceptual and intuitive methods, moving from the planning and understanding of the mind to a feeling that I can trust what decisions I make based on instinct.
