Artist Statement

I have channeled my creativity into my work as an artist and teacher tor 30 years.  As a studio artist I work in mixed-media drawing that deals with social, political and autobiographical concerns, and often makes use of found materials and narrative.  My art is an attempt to understand and respond to the human condition and my own experience, wavering between the political and the personal. I am also involved in orchestrating collaborative art projects with both artists and community members. Facilitating deep collaboration through the creative process enriches personal creativity and confidence in others while challenging me to produce new work.  My teaching reflects a community-based orientation that not only embraces the “humans” in the definition of community, but also the possibility for the experience of the arts to cultivate engagement and empathy. I strive to help art educators move toward curriculum and material choices that value and conserve our environment and respect a variety of cultures and art forms. I ascribe to Boyer’s vision that the aim of education is both career preparation and enabling students to live lives of dignity and purpose (Creating the New American College, 1994).
