Artist Statement
Making things in clay links shifting states of emotion, documenting and communicating a struggle through materiality. This constant shifting state is interpreted and digested through the use of layering, both in ceramic and raw form, to produce an object or environment. I connect clay with ideas of strength and fragility, presence and absence, death and loss. Working spontaneously or in a stream of conscious manner allows raw emotion and gesture to emerge through the material.
My experience with bereavement drives me to consider how loss affects the living; in particular the transition one makes from suffering from the death of a loved one to living with and housing that loss. Creating site-specific installations reaffirms my conviction that grief and mourning deserve a visual existence.
