UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN River Falls

Agricultural Education Major

The Agricultural Education undergraduate major prepares students for teaching positions in agricultural education as well as jobs in agricultural business, sales, service, production, marketing, public relations, extension and research. At UWRF, our program includes a mix of technical agriculture, professional education and agricultural education courses. To supplement classroom experiences, students utilize modern and well-equipped laboratories, computer facilities, three food processing pilot plants and two laboratory farms. Students in the major spend time in area middle and high school classrooms observing master teachers and building their teaching skills prior to a semester long student teaching experience at the end of the program. Students interested in extension education careers including 4-H youth development will find many opportunities to work with area extension staff and volunteers.

Students will develop the knowledge, skills and dispositions needed to be successful professionals. The major does not require a minor, but many students choose to complete one. In addition to the required classes, students must complete field experience hours, agricultural experience hours and state-mandated tests for program completion to receive a teaching license. While the program is designed to meet the requirements for an agricultural education teaching license in Wisconsin, its design closely follows the Minnesota licensure requirements as well.

Student Organizations

The UWRF Agricultural Education Society and honorary, professional Alpha Tau Alpha chapter, work with 4-H and FFA members by presenting leadership workshops and coordinating career development events. These organizations have a long history of success competing in the National Collegiate Agricultural Education Contests held in conjunction with the National FFA Convention each fall. Opportunities also exist for conducting undergraduate research and attending agricultural education research conferences.

Faculty

The Agricultural Education department faculty and staff support student development through teaching, academic advising and advising student organizations. Faculty are active in the agricultural education profession at the state and national levels. Courses supporting the major are taught by faculty from other departments both within the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Science and the College of Education and Professional Studies.
